Competition for the best student pub in The Hague
The Hague has more than 1,200 restaurants, cafés and pubs. The Coalitie Den Haag Studentenstad (an organisation that promotes The Hague as a university town) consulted with students to nominate more than 100 pubs. To choose which one is the students’ favourite, you’ve had two weeks to cast your vote at the polling locations (complete with nice prizes) at various higher education institutions. Participating students are eligible to win a liqueur-tasting package for two at Museum Van Kleef, and the grand prize being a beautiful yellow-green pub bike from Prijssnijder on Loosduinseweg. Many students cast their vote at the polling locations at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, Inholland University of Applied Sciences, and the Hotelschool The Hague. Today was the day for counting the votes. It was also the day that revealed the three pubs that received the most votes: the ones that will be visited and judged on their quality as based on the following criteria:
* Door policy (may anyone get in?)
* Look and feel
* Atmosphere / friendliness of serving personnel
* Price for beer (special student prices and discounts are a plus)
* Accessibility (is the place centrally located?)
* Range of kinds of drinks
* Special deals for students and theme evenings
* Foods (is there a student item on the menu?)
* Other facilities offered by the pub (nice seating, games, etc.)
* What about taking student requests? (can you organise something there?)
Last year’s winner for the best student pub for 2016, De Gekke Geit located at Lutherse Burgwal 5, received great scores in these categories but wasn’t on the ballot this year. By organising this contest, the Coalitie Den Haag Studentenstad wants to encourage all the restaurants, cafés and pubs to dedicate themselves to serving The Hague’s growing student population. A different business is spotlighted every year. Today, the student jury determined which three pubs would be visited for ‘further research’. Following an in-depth study, a report will be written to reveal which pub the jury thinks should be awarded the trophy and title it will hold for the rest of the year.
The presentation of this award will take place on Thursday, 1 June 2017. The three pubs that are on the ballot will be notified. At 9 pm that evening, the jury and a delegation of students will visit the winning location to present the trophy and title. If you would like to follow the story of who the winner will be, you can visit the Studeerindenhaag’s Facebook page.
