How about a student korfball club?
“We’ve noticed that students are increasingly interested in sports.”
Ellen van der Weijden is a student sports adviser at Campus – Student Life & Sports. She tells us enthusiastically about everything she sees and hears.
“Healthy living, wellbeing, a good balance between mind and body. It’s all becoming more and more important. That’s a good thing too. That is why we offer a great range of sports and facilities. The more students who do sports and exercise, the better. For this reason, it is ideal to have a good fitness area, a gym and a sports hall in the school. You can pop over there to do some sports or exercise after studying, or even while you are studying. You can go there alone, or with each other. There’s a wide range of available activities. For instance, our great range also includes yoga, zumba and boxing. Of course, you can also take part in team sports, for instance volleyball or football. You can join and take part at any time! We try to keep the cost of the Sport & Fitness pass as low as possible. This means you can do unlimited sports and workouts for 139 euros per year.”
What else do you do?
“In addition to sports facilities which we offer ourselves, the students also have many cool ideas, such as other sports that they would like to do. Some students even set up their own sports club. For instance, the Pelargos rowing club has been running for years. Rugby (The Hague Hornets) was started last year through the creation of student teams at an existing rugby club in The Hague and it now has almost 100 members. The students took the initiative and organised it all. They know what other students need. For instance, students enjoying eating together first and then having a nice beer after training. Now they can do that! Together with students and also existing clubs, we look at how we can best organise sport for students. For instance, there are more and more clubs in The Hague and the surrounding area that really have amazing options for students.”
What are the other developments?
“We have completely refurbished the fitness area with new equipment and a more spacious layout. Unfortunately, we could not extend the site, but we were able to extend the opening times. Now you can go there from Monday to Thursday between 11 am and 10 pm. And it also stays open on Fridays until 8 pm. So now you can clear your head after your studies before you go home. We have also noticed a clear demand for this. It is something you can also see, for example, with the opening times of the library. It’s great to see that it’s nice and full right away.”
Sounds good! What if I would like to set up a student korfball club?
“Just drop by Campus – Student Life & Sports. We are next to AH To Go at Johanna Westerdijkplein 6. We are always open to new ideas and like to think proactively about how we can support as many good initiatives as possible on the campus.” You can also email firstname.lastname@example.org.
