Expeditie Robinson: ‘The mental aspect is the hardest part’
How would you like to spend weeks scavenging for food, sleeping outside, suffering through really tough challenges and not being able to take a shower? Jorn Persoon, a fourth-year student in Mechanical Engineering, and Karin van Dam, a fourth-year student in Law, decided to take on the challenge by signing up for the TV survival show, ‘Expeditie Robinson’. But to even have a chance of stepping onto the white beaches this summer, they need your votes.
When this popular survival programme changed its format eight years ago to include only Dutch celebrities as participants, many viewers saw their dream fall apart. Fortunately, the producers of the 2017 series of ‘Expeditie Robinson’ also want to include non-celebrities. To get accepted, candidates have to make a video showing why they want to participate so that they can haul in as many votes as possible. Jorn and Karin see it as a wonderful opportunity.
Jorn: ‘I was a fan right from the start when the only
participants were non-celebs. Having non-celebs eligible again just at this time is perfect because shooting these episodes will take place in the summer after I graduate. Do I have any survival skills? Well, I’ve had a lot of fishing experience and I think I have a natural ability to survive in the wilderness anyway. During the previous season, for example, some people slept on the ground. I’m pretty handy, so I’m confident that I could create a place to sleep higher up and have less trouble with creepy crawlies getting into my bed.’
Karin: ‘Which Dutch celebrity would I like to spend time with on the island? Well, I thought farmer Bertie was really nice! She knows which plants you can and can’t eat, and I thought it was quite an achievement that she was the first to be voted out but was still the winner at the end of the season. I wish she could be on the show again! I also have some survival skills because I’ve often camped out in the wild. The challenges they give you look a lot harder than simply surviving, so I’d probably have to do a lot of training if I get cast! I also think the eating challenge [a challenge in which the participants have to eat things like rotten eggs and cow’s eyes, ed.] won’t be that bad if you’re really starving!’
